2021 Miss South Dakota USA visits the studio
Her sash says South Dakota, her hometown address is Alabama, and her current residence proudly lists New York city as home. Meet Caroline, 2021 Miss South Dakota USA.
As a sponsor of 7 state pageants for Miss USA & Miss teen USA, I get the honor to work with titleholders all across the Midwest, and it’s always so interesting to hear their unique stories!
Thank goodness Caroline has tenacity, because both she and her Teen, Katie, came to Minnesota right as a major storm was moving in. Through plane delays, bad roads, and the threat of 10-15 inches of snow and blizzard winds, we made the shoot happen. Thank goodness for warm studios & heated floors!

First, we shot images of both titleholders together. I hadn’t photographed much on this beautiful orchid colored background, and once I saw a beautiful purple, pink & blue toned cocktail dress on the garment rack, I knew that I wanted to do. With spring coming up, I thought the bright tones would make great social media content for the two of them. We then added some color gels, and things just POPPED! I absolutely adore the vibrancy of our gel image.
Next, both titleholders had their individual time in front of the camera. Caroline rocked a beautiful gold cocktail dress that was part of her national costume! We added her crown & sash for a few photos well. Fun fact: her crown is a bit dented after it was passed around at a volunteer event, but she said that was the best reason for it to be in less than pristine condition. We love a titleholder that knows crowns are for sharing!
Lastly, I switched my camera over to video mode and we created my signature pageant videography. We started with Caroline all dressed up in her Miss USA gown (OMG it was stunnnning!) and then changed into a vibrant blue, more casual dress, that perfectly matched her fun energy. I shot both real-time and slow motion, and I loved how those different shooting styles elevated the mood across the quick clip.
